Your next flight from Lagos could cost more, and your choice of departure times could shrink. In September 2026, soaring fuel costs are putting airlines under pressure and raising concerns about travel disruptions across Nigeria.

The pressure is real, but the reports cited here don’t establish a nationwide shutdown. For Lagos residents and visitors, the immediate concern is whether a particular airline changes its fares or schedule.

Understanding the fuel figures helps you separate that risk from a confirmed change to your booking.

Jet A1 is a major airline expense. When its price rises sharply, carriers have less room to cover other costs without raising fares or reviewing flights.

IATA’s 2026 estimate puts fuel at 31.4% of airline operating expenses, compared with 25.4% in 2025. That leaves airlines exposed when prices move quickly.

By September 27, published fuel-price reporting cited a global average of $194.90 per barrel. The underlying figure covered the week ending September 18, rather than a fresh measurement taken on September 27.

Travel Daily Media’s report on the fuel-price increase described a 7.4% weekly rise.

For your travel budget, that shows the size of the cost pressure. It doesn’t tell you what a Nigerian airline pays for each litre or what your ticket should cost.

Cruise TV News’s September 18 report on Nigerian aviation fuel placed Lagos Jet A1 prices between ₦1,719 and ₦2,100 per litre.

The Sun’s reporting gave a range reaching ₦2,150. Taken together, those reports put the cited Lagos range at roughly ₦1,719 to ₦2,150, depending on the source and date. They don’t establish one exact current price.

Prices outside Lagos have also been reported higher in some locations. Domestic airlines have sought federal intervention, including action from President Bola Tinubu.

Those appeals underline the operating pressure. They aren’t confirmation that your booked flight has been cancelled.

You may feel soaring fuel costs through fewer available seats, trimmed schedules, fewer promotional fares, or higher ticket prices. A separate fuel surcharge isn’t the only way an airline can recover costs.

Reuters’ reporting on airline schedule changes gives concrete examples of how carriers are responding.

American Airlines CFO Devon May said fourth-quarter fuel prices were about $1 per gallon above the level assumed in July. That would add roughly $1 billion to its fourth-quarter fuel bill.

United CFO Michael Leskinen said some flights planned for December 2026 would not operate. The available reporting didn’t identify those routes.

Southwest CFO Tom Doxey said the airline had cut its planned 2026 capacity growth roughly in half.
